Instrument 003 · the founding register

Coordinates

A Coordinate is a numbered mark in the founding register of a city that does not exist yet. It says you were here before there was anything to be here for.

A small brass token stamped UC-7F3A half buried in desert sand.
Plate VI — struck token, first pattern. The physical version comes later, and not for everyone.
Say this part clearly

A Coordinate is not a ticket. It does not guarantee admission, a place, a discount, a return, or that the city will ever be built. It cannot be purchased and it is not for sale. It identifies a potential founding citizen, and nothing more than that.

Anyone who tries to sell you one is selling you nothing.

What it is for

A way of finding each other before there is a there.

Every city starts with a list of people who were willing to be early. Usually that list is lost. This one is the foundation document: when the gates finally exist, we want to know exactly who was standing in the dark before there were any.

What a Coordinate does nowPuts you in the register, and sends you the nine transmissions as they are released.
What it may do laterEarly access to applications and arrival paths, the right to nominate one other person, and entry to things that are not announced.
What it will never doSkip a safety check, buy a placement, or grant admission on its own.
CostNone, now or ever.

How they are earned

  • By being early

Put your mark in the register below. That is the whole of it, for now.

  • By building

Every camp, artist, and crew application carries one.

  • By bringing someone

Referring an artist, a camp, a landowner, or an operator who turns out to be real.

  • By solving something

The Guardians hand them out. They are not consistent about it and we have stopped trying to fix that.

  • By finding one

Some are struck into objects and left in places. Some are given by founding camps. None of those are announced.

Plate XXXVII — what you are given. A small light, and no information about what is beyond it.
