Is this a Christian event?

It is founded by Christians and it is not a Christian event in the way that phrase is usually meant. There is no service, no altar call, no worship stage, no statement of faith to sign, and no religious test for citizens, camps, artists, or crew. The founders' faith shows up in one place: the City Code. Everything else is open ground. People of every faith and none are welcome, and the Code prohibits proselytizing at people who did not ask — in every direction, including ours.

Why are there Bible verses on this site?

Because the people building it are Christians, and hiding that would be its own kind of dishonesty. They are set the way a book sets an epigraph — one to a page, commenting on the argument they sit next to, and entirely possible to read past.

What they are not is a claim. No verse here means that God has endorsed this project — a thing that does not exist, owns no land, and may never be built. Scripture has a great deal to say about skilled work, beauty made carefully, hospitality to strangers, joy that is not cheap, and mystery worth searching out. It says nothing whatsoever about us, and we are not going to imply otherwise.

The one we keep nearest is Psalm 127:1 — “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” That is not a promise we are claiming. It is a warning, and it is pointed at us.

And the one we deliberately do not use, though it is the obvious slogan and people keep suggesting it, is Hebrews 11:10 — “he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” That verse is about Abraham's hope, not about an art festival in a field. Borrowing it for one would be exactly the thing this answer exists to avoid.

So it's Burning Man with rules?

No, and framing it that way would doom it. We loved the impossible art, the accidental discoveries, the temporary city, and the courage of people who build enormous things they will then destroy. We believe those things can exist inside a culture that also values dignity, sobriety, and responsibility. What we are building is a discovery-driven city with an interactive story running through it — which is a different animal from anything that currently exists, and it will succeed or fail on its own terms.

Are you affiliated with Burning Man?

No. The Unmapped City is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or associated with Burning Man Project or any of its events.

What about the lawsuit?

Our position, stated once: we were removed from another desert event this year in circumstances we believe were connected to our faith, and there is a legal dispute about it. That is a matter for lawyers and a court, and we are not going to litigate it on a website.

Two things follow from that, and both of them matter. First, we are building this as though that dispute will return nothing at all — no fundraising, plan, budget, or promise here depends on it. Second, if net proceeds are ever recovered, after legal costs and final resolution, our intention is to commit them to participatory art grants. Intention is the honest word there. Litigation is slow and uncertain, and anyone who tells you what a case will produce is guessing.

And a third thing, which is really the point: opposition is not a foundation. You cannot build a forty-year city out of a grievance. We started because of what happened. We are continuing because of what could exist.

Why the prohibitions? Isn't that the opposite of radical freedom?

Every temporary city has boundaries; most of them are just unwritten, which means they get enforced unevenly and usually against whoever has the least power. We would rather write ours down. No drugs, no public nudity or sexual activity, no dangerous intoxication, no coercion. That is a short list, it is enforceable without a morality patrol, and everything it does not mention is yours. Some excellent artists will not come because of it. We made that trade on purpose.

So is it real, or is it a film set?

Both, deliberately. The foreground is real: steel you can knock on, dust on the floor, doors that weigh something, machines that actually run. The distance is allowed to be a lie — LED, projection, mirror, forced perspective. A window onto an ocean, in a ship three hundred miles from the sea. Is any of it planned, or is that the point?

It is obsessively planned. What is unplanned is your experience of it, and keeping those two apart is the whole craft. Operations know where every exit, water point and medical station is, the exact layout, live occupancy of every enclosed space, and who is responsible for every module. Can I rent one of the caravans?

Not yet — none exist, and neither does the site. The intention is that the Caravan Ring operates year-round as lodging, residency and retreat space, which is how the art gets funded outside of one week a summer. It also changes what land we can use: a permanent rented-vehicle operation can be regulated as a campground, RV park or hotel, so the site has to pass both tests. That is now part of the search. Is the Fleet story true?

No, and we will never blur that line. The stranded ships, the experiment that went wrong, the logs that disagree — that is fiction the whole city agrees to inhabit for a week. No real vessel, service, incident or person is being depicted. Everything on the status board is the other kind of statement, and we keep them strictly apart.

Is there alcohol?

Only where lawful, age-controlled, and served responsibly by camps that have agreed to the serving rules. The standard is safety, not temperance. Impairment that endangers people ends your week.

Is there music? Are there performances?

Enormous amounts of both — just not arranged the way a festival arranges them. No headliners, no main stage, no schedule you can optimise. Music happens inside camps, on moving vehicles, in rooms with nine seats, at four in the morning, for people who happened to be there. The same goes for theater: it comes and finds you.

When and where is it?

Unknown, and we will not invent either. Land is announced at Transmission 007, and only once we hold site control and credible permitting progress. The date is announced at Transmission 008, and only once the site and build schedule can carry it. Current status

Can I buy a ticket, or invest?

No. Nothing on this site is for sale. No tickets, memberships, placements, or investments are offered, and nothing here is an offer to sell securities or a solicitation of an investment. A Coordinate is free and is not a ticket. If someone offers to sell you one, they are selling you nothing.

Are you raising money?

We are having early conversations with donors, patrons, and operators. There is no public fundraiser open right now. When one opens, it will be run through a named legal entity, with named directors, and a published account of where the money goes — and it will be announced on the status board before it is announced anywhere else.

What is FOMO, exactly?

The emotional name for the same thing. The city is built to be larger than a week on purpose, so no one sees all of it, so people have to talk to each other to find out what happened. Will it be safe?

That is the constraint everything else bends around. A remote temporary city needs medical, fire, water, sanitation, traffic, heat and cold planning, and real incident command — run by people who have done it before, not by enthusiasm. If we cannot staff and insure it properly, we will not open the gates, and we will tell you why.

What if it never happens?

Then you will have been told, in public, at each step, exactly how far it got and where it stopped. That is the deal we are making with anyone who signs up this early.
